Why A4 316

A4 contains added molybdenum, which resists the chlorides that cause pitting corrosion in salt water and salt-laden air. On rigging and lifting hardware that matters more than anywhere else — pitting eats into the shank from a single point and the shackle can fail under load with no rust streak to warn you. See our guide to choosing between A2 and A4.

Before you use these for lifting

The working load limit already carries the manufacturer's safety factor — roughly 6:1 to 9:1 against the breaking load across this range. Never exceed the working load limit, and never treat the breaking load as a working figure. Tighten the pin fully, load along the axis of the bow, and never side-load a shackle across the jaw. Stainless is chosen for corrosion resistance rather than outright strength; a galvanised steel shackle of the same diameter will carry more.
